After months of planning, we are happy and excited that just hours remain until the beginning of the 2010 Flagstaff Folk Festival. We’ll have everything in place first thing Saturday morning for a great weekend of music and fun in one of the largest events of its kind in Arizona.

If you’re still making plans to attend check out the ‘details’ link above to get all the information you’ll need for a great weekend. If you’re on the fence about coming….WHY? 4 Stages, 110+ acts, workshops, jams, history, food, and fun, all under the pines in the great cool summer weather of Flagstaff.

The Fires around Flagstaff

We’ve received a number of calls and emails from folks concerned about the recent forest fires around Flagstaff impacting the festival. At this point, the main active fire, The Schultz Fire, is on the other side of the city and the prevailing winds will continue to lead the smoke away from town and the festival grounds. I anticipate no major impacts on the festival at this point. There is no smoke in town and no threat to buildings within the city limits. Please email me with any direct concerns – folkfestival@ffotm.net. Looking forward to a great weekend!

UPDATE (6/22 8 PM): There has been a smoke advisory issued for East Flagstaff overnight but at this point there has been no smoke in Downtown or West Flagstaff, where the festival will take place. We still anticipate clear air and good times at the festival this weekend. I will continue to update the webpage as the week goes on.

Registration Wrapping Up

As of today I have received 46 solo and 30 band registrations for this year’s festival. Last year we had a total of 110 performance slots so there’s still room for performers wishing to play this year – but I have a feeling that space will get tight as the May 15th registration deadline approaches. 2010 Festival Planning Underway

We’re starting to get things in motion for this year’s festival. I’ll be posting the performer sign-up form here by the end of the month. I’ll send out an email to the performer’s list when I do, so if you haven’t already, now’s a good time to go get your name on the performer’s email list.

A few updates & Pickin’ in the Pines!

The dates for the 2010 festival will be June 26th and 27th. I don’t anticipate too much new information here until late winter. In the meantime, check out the other Folk Festivals in Arizona, including Prescott in October and Glendale in March.

We also invite everyone to another great festival produced by the Flagstaff Friends of Traditional Music, Pickin’ in the Pines, which will take place September 18 – 20 at Pine Mountain Amphitheater just south of Flagstaff. This year’s festival features a great lineup of traditonal and acoustic bands, including the Gibson Brothers, Claire Lynch Band, Steep Canyon Rangers, Crooked Still, The Freight Hoppers and Burnett Family Bluegrass. We’ll also be featuring Murphy’s Law, Muskellunge Bluegrass, Red Desert Ramblers, Headline Bluegrass Band, Voluntary String Band, Mars Hillbillies, The Bears and the Bees, and Tony Norris & Sid Hausman. The 2009 Folk Festival was a great success. From our openers starting things with fabulous sets on Saturday morning to the Band Scramble Sunday evening, we had a great weekend packed with great performances, workshops, jams, and dancing, as well as great times on the festival grounds.

A huge thank you to all the performers, audiences, and volunteers as well as Flagstaff Cultural Partners and the Pioneer Museum. Stay tuned for information on next years festival!

Preparations are wrapping up and we’re preparing for our best festival ever! Check the schedule page to find your favorite bands and take a look here for all the information you need for a great weekend.

Atop the great schedule of talent and workshops, we have great food vendors, t-shirt, CD, & instrument sellers and a plentiful opportunities for informal jamming and sitting back and enjoying some great music. Also back this year is the big barn dance Saturday night and of course the band scramble Sunday afternoon. New this year is an instrument swap Sunday morning starting at 9 near the main entrance of the Coconino Center.
